Law enforcement across South Florida has increased its “state of awareness” in the wake of the tragic bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
Security will be tight at the Lauderdale Air and Sea Show this weekend and officials in Miami said they are considering tightening security for next week’s Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run.
In the wake of the bombings, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado told CBS Miami that he has confidence in the city’s police department. He told the news station that the city is working with the federal government, the FBI and other agencies to protect its citizens and that people should not be “defeated by fear.”
Regalado said K9 officers will be at the marathon as will the police department’s bomb squad, a first for Miami. Runners will be asked not to bring any bags and water and towels will be provided.
According to a statement made by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, security will be increased in key sensitive areas of the county as a precautionary measure, even though there has been no threat to South Florida.
Members of the community are encouraged not to fear as members of South Florida law enforcement are trained for situations such as the bombings in Boston.
