In December, the state of Florida banned Inspired Living at Sun City Center, a Tampa Bay-area nursing home, from admitting new residents after investigators determined that an “immediate serious danger” exists for residents. The Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) cited multiple ongoing safety issues in the facility, with one identified problem being their failure to supervise residents determined to be at-risk for falls.
This comes just months after Baron, Herskowitz, and Cohen filed a lawsuit against Inspired Living at Sun City Center on behalf of deceased resident David Goldberg, who died in August 2017 as a result of a fall and the staff’s failure to supervise him.
Mr. Goldberg passed away one day later after the fall from a subarachnoid hemorrhage and facial bone fractures caused by the fall. This is just one of the approximately 1,800 fall-related fatalities that occur in nursing homes and assisted living facilities each year, many of which would have been prevented with adequate supervision.
